300
March 18th, 2007
I could have easily titled this post “Finally” as well because I finally got to see 300. I had thought that I would see it on the friday it opened with my good friends Mark and Bert but that opening friday I found out that they had gone to see a midnight showing without me.
Crushed I tell you, two weeks pass and I finally I make it to the theater. It was great, a Frank Miller comic brought to life in all it’s blood hurling glory. I think the most interesting thing about it is that it is based, however loosely, on recorded history. I know there has been at least one other film made about these 300 Spartans who took on an invading Persian army and there is quite a bit more fantasy in the frames of this particular adaptation but still to think that it finds it’s roots in something that actually happened, perhaps not to even the fancy of the original record of the events, but history none the less. I don’t know about you but for me it sparks a curiosity in those and other times in our past where men and women stood up and fought for a belief, for their home, their land, their family. I doubt any fiction could out do those stories.
They say may you live in interesting times, I wonder if it will take thousands of years to determine if these times we live in now are as interesting as the story of these 300 men and the battle they fought. If movies will be made about the war in Iraq and the brave men and women who serve in our military with the same romance and sense of honor found in their sacrifice.
Well it was a saturday well spent, distracted, engaged, entertained, and thought provoking. I highly recommend it.
