The importance of reading the manual.

    March 20th, 2007

I am a proud user of Mint to track the stats on my site. As of Saturday I had right around 323 unique visitors to the site since December of ‘06, which I think is pretty good given that prior to Saturday the only thing to look at was the aforementioned three-year-old portfolio. So once this version of the site launched I watch with anticipation to see what numbers I would see on the site now.

I watched and I waited and as of this morning I had one unique visitor listed in my mint stats since the launch. At this point, I must admit, I was carrying a bit of a pout on the old mug. The old site wasn’t much to look at in the way of a design it was a sort of hobbled together experiment initiated by the May 1 reboot that took place a year or so ago. So as you can imagine I had that old adage “you only get one chance to make a first impression” rolling about in my head. Since I had been giving the same sort of, well to be honest, total crap first, second, and third impression for at least a year now I was certain that I had had every visitor that was ever going to come to the site stop by see what little there was and figuring that was it move on never to return to see that I finally made an effort.

So finally fed up I pinged my buddy Chris and told him to jump up check out the site and I watched carefully as he made his visit and I realized this isn’t working at all. So abandoning my male instincts to put together the product sans diagrams I consulted the docs on mint and realized that my upgrades on the site specifically my addition of Wordpress effectively stopped all tracking and I needed to go through the process of tying mint into my wp install.

Color me happy, after a few flipped switches and some cutting and pasting I am now reading visits and all the little bells and whistles that Mint offers to sites with blogs are active. Still my regret at not knowing if anyone came to see the site in those first few days of this design will haunt me as will the knowledge that it could have been avoided if I had just read the manual, or in this case the FAQ at http://www.haveamint.com.
