Importance of HTML Headings for Accessibility

August 1st, 2008

I came across this video from a link on Cameron Moll’s blog. I think it offers some great insight into coding that you don’t often find or rather a look at building a site from a rare perspective. I often see faces scrunch up a bit in that look that screams “huh?” when I speak about semantic HTML.

All too often our developers fall into some bad habits when working up the front end. We rely on they, whose primary responsibilities are in establishing a strong framework for our data, to also provide a front end solution and deadlines being what they are prompts them to look for the quickest solution to match provided designs. There is a fundamental problem inherent in that approach, that serious thought in how best to structure the content with markup semantically is not considered in favor of an easy and often ugly solution of adding unnecessary markup to target with the CSS to satisfy the requests of a design as if the structure has little value to the final product.

My hope is to affect change in this process and I have had some small success but the battle and indeed the war is far from over. This video is nice ammo.
